Mary's Blood - Revenant (Review)

April gives an occasion to remember again band Destrose. This band has given so many projects that they all want to be called 破壊の薔薇家族 ("hakai no bara kazoku", "Rose of Destruction Family"). But today I want to discuss something really special.

My Rating: 92/100

Band Mary's Blood is not a unique phenomenon. But their creativity improves over time, and this is a very big rarity. It happened not at once - only EP "Azure" (2013) showed that this is a new legend. The result is a way out to mainstream and three full-length albums. And today we have the fourth full-length. It would seem that by this time band can be blown away, like a ball, encountering a needle. However, first seconds convince us of the opposite. Album from the very beginning attracts the listener with a powerful picture.

I will not throw pathos phrases like "I very rarely wonder, but ...". I'll just say that when I took off the headphones, I could not say anything for a long time. This album made a very big impression on me. Yes, I expected it to be a concept album. But the expectation was not justified. Fortunately, this is the only not justified expectation. In the rest - everything is fine. Album is quite diverse. There are pretty powerful tracks (1, 2, 8, 11 tracks) and pop songs (3, 6, 10 tracks), and even something similar to classic hard-n-heavy (5 track). The logic of tracks arrangement in album was also very much appreciated. Emotions are constantly changing while listening to album. First you hear "You suck!", and after three minutes - "You say that love you." This is one of the signs that distinguishes a professional from a easy rider - with a professional composer and sound designer you'll never be bored.

Earlier I did not like voice - it was an obscure groans. I can not say that the situation has changed significantly, but this time vocalist shows the limits of she's abilities. Unfortunately, on this all ends. Yes, vocal parts are quite powerful, but they are monotonous. The only thing that really improved the vocalist is pronunciation in English.

Instrumental parts are something incredible. I rarely respond positively to both the general constructions and instrumental parts. But this is the very rare case. It would seem that guitar riffs are not very complicated. But here you can hear a lot of interesting shades of performance. Guitar solos are another positive moment. Phrase "positive moment" will very weakly convey all the splendor of guitarist's talent, but you can only say this - they are so beautiful. The only inconvenient moment: a little strange looks a standard E guitar tuning. Such music is interesting to play on Drop D# or Drop D tuning. Well, contence is the main thing. Also here is a very powerful rhythm section. Mari is a laconic person, but in studio and on stage she creates incredible things. Drums is very diverse. Here we hear a blast-beat, a skank beat and just an amazing set of rhythms at a low and medium tempo. In addition, in standard (for heavy metal) rhythm section formula, a lot of interesting things were brought in. Most of the impression is created by drummer.

Will this wave of happiness continue in future? Or will they soon reach their limit? It's difficult to make unambiguous conclusions. But one thing is for sure: this album is wonderful. They once again confirmed that they are a world-class project. Split-up of this band will be a very great loss not only for Japan, but also for world music. I hope that this will not happen in the next 10 years.
