“Russia” and “Nu-Metal” is a good combination. Such music uses simple patterns, which is quite tempting for musicians who have little opportunity for development. Release about which I will now tell is another confirmation of this trend.

The first thing to notice is very simple naming. Simple project naming, simple song naming. As if these guys came to a novice creative and said “think up some names”. Also worth mentioning is album structure: two powerful songs, two songs on a clean and again two powerful songs. I cann't call this idea a good one - desire to drop the album on 4th track is very great.

Composer's work is very simple. It seems that the composer was not at all. As if one of members brought the lyrics, guitarist suggested by some of power chords, drummer suggested something from the standard patterns. This approach is not typical for professionals. Professional or just good work is always done carefully and always by one person.

Vocalist is good. But not everything is so simple. It seems that the project had the task to emphasize the narrating person as much as possible. Well, vocalist perfectly coped with this task. However, there is a very great desire here to emphasize the vocalist without looking at the rest.

Why did I write “not everything is so simple”? Because the other part of compositions - instrumental parts - look very simple. Power chords at middle tempo and a few scales on a clean are all that can be said about a guitarist. The main part of diversity refers to timbre color, and not to performing techniques. For example, clean on verses and overdrive on chorus in the 1st track. Or wah-wah on 2nd track. Rhythm section looks boring. There are only standard patterns.

Strong emphasizing of the narrator and the general idea is a deliberately failing strategy. Yes, this tactic can bring a lot of popularity (with a good pitch). But with such a task, one has only to retreat from the mass template - and you become like a Mickey Mouse. As for this album, there is a minimum for an aesthetic listener. You can listen to it as you walk down the street, but as a work of art it’s pretty boring. Here is a good vocalist and quite interesting ideas. But everything else is a continuous stream of boredom on 6 tracks.

Professional musician uses toy instruments

People from Russia are incredibly inventive. For example, Vaganych was able to write music on toy instruments.



So, this is a guitar (which is very similar to a ukulele), on which the frets don't work. The box says “develops the imagination”, and author comments on this “because you need a lot of imagination to imagine that you can play with it.” As well as another set of instruments - a drum, drumsticks, a flute, a tambourine, a mouth organ and castanets.

Only later did one difficulty arise. From this, only the flute works normally. Drum membrane has no tension and cannot be tuned. However, author thought of putting mediators there, as well as unscrewing delay and reverb. The guitar also failed to tune - it's impossible to catch a note. This activity reminded to author of the violin tuning: turned the machine head a little and good-bye. However, two guitar tracks were recorded, but reamping was performed on one of the guitar tracks.

The result was a kind of trip-hop with solo brass. But author admits that he used a lot of plugins and shows how it sounds without processing. As you can see, you can even make music from this.

Galifax - Kraski Sterty (Review)

Band Halifax is not a metal band in the classical sense of this word. This is a creative association of people, which is focused on metal music popularization. This project exists since 2014 and during this time they did not officially have a constant line-up. Nevertheless, they have already managed to release a good album. And recently they released another album, about which I'll tell you today.

I thought that an unfamiliar format would have a big influence on the quality of methods for solving artistic tasks. And I can not say that I was wrong: there is something in this plan that can be traced. Here you can hear typical power metal (1 track), typical heavy metal with a lot of melody (4, 5, 9 tracks), something between heavy and power metal (3, 7 tracks) and even something epic (2 , 6 tracks).

Overall structure looks pretty simple. Non-traditional format of metal project had a great influence: it seems that composer had little understanding of instrumentalists advantages and disadvantages. Composer's work can not be called very difficult. It's noticeable that work is rather superficial: initially there was not any specific idea - composer took as a basis the previous album and just naled the standard solutions. There is also an attempt to hide many shortcomings with the help of a huge number of scales on guitar. Well, that's a good idea. But one such solution is impossible to hide everything. Well, the sound was very cool.

Vocalist is excellent. But it seems that composer simply showed the vocalist the lyrics and said "Sing!". Vocal parts can not be called very diverse, but it's performed excellent. Noticeable is the minimal voice processing - sound designer was not afraid to show all vocalist's abilities.

At first glance, the instrumental parts look cool - here you can hear interesting shades of performance, characteristic for professionals. But when you start listening carefully, that "coolness" ends on two instruments - guitar and synthesizer. Guitar has a lot of melodic parts, a lot of scales. From such a number of scales can begin a real ringing in your ears. Guitar also participates in rhythm section, but this does not accentuate. You can also notice a large number of keyboards. Synthesizer is used very competently and the sound is very diverse. Rhythm section - everything is very predictable here. Bassist has a small segment at the beginning of 6th track. All the rest - ordinary patterns. Approximately the same with drums. At a slow tempo there was invented something interesting, but in general - ordinary patterns.

I can call this release good. The overall sound makes a good impression, but the album is superficial and one-sided. I would like to say that composer needs to work more closely on some segments. But for a project from Russia more than 3 years of existence - this is the period after which fundamentally nothing will change. The only thing that can change here is the names in the column "above the album worked" and the costs of promotion.

DIY guitar from garbage

In one of my entries, I discussed a video that guitar can be made from garbage. But in this video of the garbage consisted only of body and bridge. Is it possible to make a guitar completely from garbage? In this video, one simple solution was suggested.



Author begins the video with criticism of a similar video, and then goes to dump. At this time, a crossover-thrash plays against the background, which is very good for picture. As a result, it was possible to collect the following loot: a bottle (this will consist of a bridge), several pieces of pressed sawdust, some wires (and author notices that copper wires are a rarity in garbage dumps), magnets (with their help open / close doors on cabinets or nightstands). String could not be found, so it was decided to use a guitar string. At first the author crafts a pickup, simultaneously explaining theoretical basis. Author spent three days on the craft pickup and result turned out bad, but destination was achieved. Further assembly process is shown at an accelerated pace. At the end of video, author tries to play djent. Signal is very weak - few coil turns. Author also understands this and therefore put great emphasis on gain.

As you can see, it's pretty simple.

Charisma - Strazhi Granits (Review)

"Russia" and "Power Metal" are not always a good combination. Power Metal uses complex (compared to pop music) patterns and virtuoso solos. And in Russia there are very few good musicians - the state supports only categories of persons for whom the understanding of real art is not available (hucksters, warriors, etc.). Well, a professional is not only letters on papers, but also the ability to overcome difficulties. And today I will tell you about one such example.

I can discuss our stupid financial system for a long time, but here it's not necessary. Just tell about new release from Russia. Band "Charisma" has existed for 12 years already and it's a very good indicator for a country where musicians have very few opportunities. But when you listen to their previous work and compare with it, it becomes clear, due to what they so long stay on stage.

Composer's work can be called interesting. But it seems that there was enough power for one track (4 tracks). And a little for one more (3 tracks). The rest is frank quickie. Moreover, members understood this perfectly - 3rd and 4th tracks are not located at the very beginning so that the listener's emotions gradually increase. And that from the album there is a good aftertaste, in 8 track the virtuosic guitar improvisation is inserted. I assume that big bet was made on the first audition, because in the analysis you can see the absence of many shades in composer's work. You can also notice that even in the most interesting tracks, there is little originality - the 4 tracks (some sections of the general constructions and vocal parts) were reminded me of song In This World Beyond (Loudness). How to talk about the rest? I don't know. Also, there are errors in mixing, and this is not expected from professionals.

An excellent vocalist continues this picture. Here it's impossible to say anything bad about the vocalist, because a great talent is noticeable. Of course, vocal parts and lyrics can hardly be called interesting and unique. Nevertheless, the processing very well hides the flaws and in the end we hear an excellent voice.

Instrumental parts structures are not very interesting, but it makes a good impression. But basically it concerns to 3, 4 and 8 tracks. All the rest is a compilation of standard (for power metal) templates. Well, this also needs abilities. But it's hard to call interesting. The only sane attempt to diversify the instrumental parts was in 5th track. This attempt was clean on guitar in the beginning. Nuff Said. Also, you can not hear the bass at all. Maybe because of simple processing, maybe because of a weak attack, but bass is not audible. Drums - everything is predictable here. Standard heavy metal drumming, blast beat, Booty Camp beat. That's all.

Here is such an album turned out - a huge talent, but some shortcomings have greatly spoiled the impression of album. Yes, I can say that the guys released a good album. But here the minimum for a professional level. Mistakes in mixing, incomprehensible guitar and bass re-amping, standard composer ideas - if they told me that the band existed for 12 years, I would not have believed it. Well, I don't think that they will change anything in future. That's all.

Djent stick by Vaganych

Grab the pole from shovel and use it to modify the guitar. Do you think this is impossible? In Russia everything is possible.



Here you can see that bass guitar is being reworked. It's not entirely clear why - scale length remains the same, but there is no truss rod. Distortion can be put on bass. Nevertheless, pole from shovel excellently enters the docking area, which is very encouraging to author of video.

Actually, this can be played and sometimes even music is produced. This is suitable for djent and progressive music. Well, we wish the author success in working with this device.

Dmitry Demyanenko - Universe (Review)

It happens that talented musicians live many kilometers away from you. And it so happens that they live in a neighboring city. Recently I found a very interesting solo project from Krasnodar (Southern Russia).

Before, I did not hear the band Shokran, where Dmitry was a guitarist. I don't know if it's right to give an assessment without listening to previous works. But one thing is obvious: dude has great talent. I noticed an interesting album even on cover art. My blog has a dark theme, so you will not notice it. But if you go to bandcamp official page, you'll notice that the cover blends in an interesting way with the page. Thus, it's given a hint that for author there are no borders. Yeah, a good album starts with interesting shades on cover.

Album can not be called very special, but this year it's the best instrumental album I've heard. Usually the most interesting albums can not be described with words. Kevin Lytle - the first one who made me think about how relative my assessments. And now I see a second person who shows about the same thing. All that I write in this entry is just a small part of what I experienced after I took off the headphones. When we say "instrumental progressive", then the word "similar" in this context sounds like a curse. Nevertheless, it reminds me solo project of Isao Fujita. And also there are some similarities with one of his projects - Cube-Ray. At least that's what I remembered.

Composer's work is excellent. Especially I liked the idea of ​​dividing compositions into two parts. This is very noticeable in tracks 2 and 4. That is, the overall construction changes approximately in half of composition. This is not a trivial key change, but a change in overall composition pattern with the help of additional instruments and / or some turns.

Instrumental parts performed excellently. However, such projects have only two options - to play well or not to produce studio albums. But still it's worth noting that after word "djent" I expected an ordinary grinding "zeros" on seventh string for several notes on piano sampler in the style of late 7Years To Midnight. Yes, reality is harsh. But this album pleasantly surprised me - everything here is much more interesting. There is a high skill level. But here is not shredding in the style of Mike Batio, when virtuosity violates all reasonable limits. Here the performance is exactly what the artistic task requires. What else can you say about an excellent musician?

In the end, I wrote few words about this release. Not only because for Russia albums of this level are rare. Not only because at the world level this album looks impressive. Usually don't say anything about such albums - this is the main reason. Such albums are listened to and silently admired. However, you can see for yourself.

Dmitry Demyanenko - Obsession (MV)

Yes, it did not seem to you, it's a copy of Animals As Leaders, but with the standard bars sizes. There was copied a lot, even a dark room with unusual lighting. However, this does not negate the fact of having an excellent talent. Composition leaves a pleasant impression.

Arida Vortex - Small Toy Soldier (Review)

Russian scene is a garbage dump. There are no good conditions for musicians, and the few that appear are forced to meet the extremely high demand for disposable surrogate. Otherwise, it's impossible to survive. And if we say "modern Russian metal", it always means grinding one note on C1 under blast-beat. Anyway, nobody admire real art.

I will not talk about all shades of our stupid system. I will talk about a new release from Russia. Today, in my headphones, band Arida Vortex and EP Small Toy Soldier. Aactually, this is heavy / power metal - this is a rarity for Russia. Band has existed for 20 years. This is an excellent indicator, considering all the disasters that Russians have been involved in during this time. Nevertheless, a great experience necessarily means great expectations of listeners and critics. During this time, project could already try many different patterns and develop its own unique style.

But here there is no noticeable unique style or at least some original idea. Сomposer did his job simply: joined the known patterns, but in such a way that the diversity seemed. For this reason, we hear something very familiar. For example, lyrics, general constructions, chorus and vocal parts in second track (Riders Of Steel) is very similar to Never Surrender (Takayoshi Ohmura). And there are a lot of similarities in album, although there are only four tracks. I can not say that this is the best idea, but it sounds cool. Perhaps, this is all that can be said about the composer, since here there is an emphasis on overall constructions.

Vocalist is good. Performance at highest level. It turned out badly the change of key in second track. But in general, we can say that vocalist showed himself perfectly.

Instrumental parts are also performed magnificently. General melodic picture, general aggressive constructions - we can say that instrumental parts are diverse. Instrumentalists are clearly the masters of their business - no complaints, everything is performed perfectly. Crazy riffs and virtuoso solos are a joy to ears. And this festival is supplemented by a diverse rhythm section - here is standard (for heavy metal) rhythm section formula, and blast-beats, ect.

What can you say at the end? They are very talented guys. But still we see only a copy of Western metal bands, albeit quite qualitative. Russian band, where there is nothing Russian - unfortunately, it already sounds without any sedition. I don't want to say anything bad. But if in 20 years they came up with only a copy of Western metal bands, then I'm not impressed.

5 parameters to understand whether guitarist can play metal

How to determine if a guitarist can play metal? It's pretty simple. This is told by guitar teacher Yuri Shilnikov.



He argues that in order to see skill level, five parameters are enough. But first the reservation follows: these parameters are valid only under conditions of correctly put experiment. Also, some shortcomings you can be heard by high-skilled guitarists - no one is perfect. Nevertheless, we will begin:

First. Presence of a clean pause. That is, a person plays something and in pauses everything is clean - nothing needs to be cleaned in sequencer.

Second. Scrape while changing chords. If you can hear - it's a full bottom, it's worse than any punk, it's an absolute zero. Best indicator is to play muted fifth.

Third. Attack, speed of sound formation. Attack must be as sharp as a boxer's punch.

Last parameter is one whole, but for better understanding, narrator divides it into two subgroups. This is a desync: macro-desync and micro-desync. Macro-desync includes early clamps. For example, when a guitarist tries to play a fifth, but it has a gurgling sound. We need it to sound very sharp, like a gunshot. In fact, it's quite difficult and few people can immediately do it. Also, the early change of position refers to macro-desync. Consider a sequence of two fifth: in this play hand often leaves earlier than necessary. This is a fairly common mistake.

As for micro-desync: here author cites an example of a passage with a scale - first plays incorrectly, then plays correctly. On first example, you hear that passage is buried in some junk, on second - the notes are clearly audible.

Guitar pedal handmade

In Russia, people are always looking for opportunities to do something themselves. For example, a guitar pedal: in Russia it's very expensive. Yes, there is a company Yerasov, but this company has a very small production and can't fully satisfy the great demand.

On YouTube, I found two videos that describe process of self-manufacturing guitar overdrive pedal.





Diagram shows that technically this is fuzz, but sound will be overdrive. Author of video claims that this device is costs 200 rub (3.37 USD). Price includes only components of chip and knobs - the rest is free. Case is made of a candy box. But instead of a printed circuit board, cardboard is used. Also, instead of a button, a simple switcher was installed. Therefore it's impossible to call it a pedal - switching is done by hand (not by foot). Also, author did not attach power socket (beginners usually don't have a power supply), instead there is a place for connecting a "PP3" type battery.

First video shows the scheme and build process. Author did not comment on installation of each element, but only highlighted it in red. Also an important detail: negative must be connected to case.

On second video you can hear sound that this device creates. It's impossible to play serious concerts with this, but for an beginner's level it's a great option.

Unique guitars - Djent Stick (Russian Edition)

Those who follow music channels on Youtube can know Jared Dines and his djent stick. He has already told a lot about this device, so there's no point in talking about him. Today I want to write about a similar device, which is made in Russia.



On this video you can see very rough work. Several pieces of wood are connected together, creating a kind of body and a recess for pickups. Bass pickups are installed here. I have not been able to see where the electronics are, but obviously it's outside the body. Also a strange solution to solder the wire to bridge. I could't see for what it was done.

Video lasts just a minute. Sound like a guitar for 150-200 USD. But you can notice that the base is fairly simple to manufacture.

Inspector Maniac - Guitar for metal

There is a popular opinion that all achievements of Russians are due only to Europeans. And if Russians start doing something on their own, then it turns out to be complete nonsense. Nevertheless, something Russians are doing well. For example, guitars.



On video you can see guitar "Maniac" from company "Inspector". Guitar body has an asymmetric "arrow" shape. Body is made of walnut (there is an opinion that its properties are similar to mahogany) and covered with glossy varnish. Neck is made of three pieces of maple. This is fixed to the body with bolts. Fretboard is made of palisander. Frets have high height and medium width. Hardware from Wilkinson. Pickup from ToneRider. Potentiometer is very smooth and made in Japan.

Next, author of video tells about features of body structure. Guitar is very light - 3 kilograms. Body is made very well - a cut at junction of neck and body allows access to upper strings. Guitar body is compared with Jackson King V - body is symmetrical and widens from place of neck attachment. This does't allow access to upper strings. Also from 9:51 the behavior of guitar on strap is compared. Maniac is perfectly balanced. Again, compared with Japanese Jackson King V.

And, finally, the main advantage: price of guitar is 31000 rub (530 USD). But usually this sound is cost 1500 - 2000 USD.

Unique guitars: the Cobra

After a long time playing guitar, you want something special. But in Russia custom production is very expensive and very inefficient. Well, if you want to do something good, do it yourself.



Don't afraid sad voice of narrating person - Russian people has few opportunities for realize. The case took place in 2010. Initially, there was a project "Skeleton" - a stick with two mini-humbuckers, which were made in USSR. Author of video claims that it sounded good, but very specific. Author decided to use neck for something else. And he was not mistaken. Later, a guitar was made, which he called "The Cobra".

Neck is made of a single piece of wood. Truss rod was made of a regular metal spoke. But the way of planting is very interesting: author did't have a special milling machine, so he used an ordinary drill to make holes along the entire site. Drill was wrapped with a painting tape to show depth of dive. Using a chisel, an even trough was made. The whole construction is closed with a usual wooden strip. Neck is connected to body with bolts.

But author did not stop there. He made a rock climbing. This is when small roundings are made between frets. There is an opinion that this allows you to develop a greater speed game. I can't say it's true or not. But author argues about interesting feelings during the playing.

Guitar body is also interesting: it's made of four boards, each of which has gaps spaced for electronics and wires. Shielding of electronics is done using conventional foil. This design of guitar body reminded me of Killer Guitars signature model of Akira Takasaki. Strings go through the body. The fastening point is strengthened by a small metal patch.

From 6:50 author begins to play on this instrument. Korean pickups create a good sound. As you can see, making a good guitar is pretty simple, if not considering the stage of painting.

Unique guitars: the skateboard

There are quite popular claim that the structure of guitar body is very important. But this video refutes this. Guitar can be made from garbage. Really. And if there is a good pickup and a good guitarist, then the sound will be good. For example, a guitar can be made from an old skateboard.



Among foul language and vulgar jokes you can hear a lot of interesting things. For example, you can only consider one parameter - length of scale. Here it's a Fender's scale - 25.5 inches. Bridge can also be made of any material that is softer than strings. A tin can fragment can be a good patch. Shielding and special wires are not needed, it will be enough ordinary wires from washing machine. Electronics can be left "as is" - so that in the event of a breakdown it can be quickly repaired. Practicality. Most convenient strap fastening system is "EZ Screw" system. You can repair machine head with a coin. And using a coin you can customize a volume.

Arda - Severnyi Krest (Review)

Once I saw a letter on my e-mail. Content was approximately this: "You write reviews on Japanese bands. You don't have good music in Russia? ". I thought about these words. Russia have good music, but all good bands were created in 80s and 90s. In last 20 years Russia has no decent bands.

Russia has a stupid financial system - unfinished capitalism, which was created by immigrants from socialism. And if a project lives longer than 4-5 years, then it can be titled "legendary" - it nothing fundamentally can stop. But I will not discuss our system, I'll tell you about an interesting band. Band was founded in 2000. 17 years of activity in the world, which changes every hour is a great indicator.

Let's start review with composer. Very weak composer's work. Artistic task is formulated very simply. Performance at a very high level, but work of composer is frank quickie. It seems that composer did not exist at all. That is, instrumentalists improvised during the recording. I don't want to say that it's bad. But if we want to do work well, then we need to prepare thoroughly for this.

Lyric about courage, heroism, strong personality is a very fertile soil for many metal bands. This is a very good theme. Yes, these guys don't get the material from most interesting angle - not enough just to drive at full speed, road can be bumpy. What can you do, Eastern Europeans, they are like that. But it's worth noting that voice is wonderful. Feels very strong vocalist. Vocal techniques are monotonous, but voice is very good.

Instrumental especially does't stand out. But it's performed exelent. An interesting decision to use several guitarists: several people can solve an artistic tasks with maximum shades. But also there is one strange decision: use of a guitar with dropped tuning. For power metal is typical use of guitars with standart or Drop D tunings. Sometimes you can hear Drop C tuning, but this is a rare phenomenon for power metal. But here we hear Drop B tuning. A high voice with a low guitar tuning is a strange decision.

Rhythm section also sounds good. But sound is monotonous. In fourth track drummer tried to portray diversity, but it turned out badly. Again bad work of composer.

Band has an excellent level of performance. Their advantages perfectly hide shortcomings. They have a great talent, but in the end we see only an middle-rated European band. But this is not the most interesting thing in this entry. Like many well-known bands, they follow the already known way. And this is what I don't like Western bands - they have reached a certain level, after which they keep it. No steps forward, no new ideas, only normal retention. Yes, one can hold discussions for a long time about the fact that everything is relative. But they can do better.

Inspector Katana - Guitar for metal

Recently I wrote about guitars that are made in Russia. Usually this is custom production at a very high price. But now there is a batch production at a low price. And on October 11 a video was published, where they try to play on one exemplar. For this, a model with an unusual body design was chosen - Katana.



On video you can hear guitar sound. Amplifier is Randall RG50TC. Video in Russian. For those who don’t know Russian, I will shortly describe its content.

Guitar body is very like a strat. First thing you can pay attention to is texture of tree. It's made from fraxinus and is covered with oil, which is typical for very expensive instruments for 2000 - 2500 USD. Price of this guitar is 450 USD.

Guitar body is processed by a method of brashing and due to it on body such drawing turns out. Neck is made of three pieces of maple. It's covered with a polyurethane matt varnish and pleasant to touch. Neck is connected to body with bolts. Head is a continuation of neck. It's not glued, which is typical for such price. Frets is high, when you do bends, you don't creak on fretboard. Hardware from China. Korean accessories are put on more expensive instruments. Machine heads keep the tuning well, without backlash. Pickup - Tone Rider. Very well underlines the attack. Potentiometer is very well located - it can't be accidentally touched. Also on it's written "Made in Japan".

Also included is a case for this body form. But author of video says that it turned out to put this instrument in a case from the strat.
